New Rule Could Turn HFs into Insider Trading Informers

U.S. financial regulators are looking to hedge funds to help catch insider traders.

Reuters reported that the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, which is part of the Treasury Department, is working on a rule that would require U.S. hedge funds to file reports notifying authorities of suspicious trading by employees or outside parties. 

Steve Hudak, a spokesman for FinCEN, told Reuters that the rule could be filed for public comment sometime in the first half of 2013.

If the rule is adopted, hedge funds would be forced to spend more money on expanding their compliance and legal departments.
