The former assistant of New York hedge fund manager Todd Meister is using the internet to raise $821,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to grand larceny in March.
The Daily News reported that Renata Shamrokova, 28, posted a plea on a crowdsourcing website in an attempt to gather the funds and has until March 2015 to pay Meister back the full amount in order to avoid jail time. Shamrokova has also been ordered to give back at least $425,000 by December 20.
Shamrokova admitted in court that she stole nearly $1 million from Meister, the co-founder of New York-based Priderock Management, to buy clothes, furniture, international trips and jewelry in 2011 and last year.
Shamrokova will face up to three years in prison if she can’t repay Meister.
Meister is currently the chairman and CEO of Meister Company, which owns minority interests in a large array of firms, including Radius Investments and Green Partners.
