Move over, Sohn Conference. There is another hedge fund industry conference in town that showcases investment ideas for hedge fund investors and industry professionals.
SABR Capital Management teamed up with corporate law firm Schulte Roth & Zabel, both based in New York, to present their inaugural “Institutional Investor Best Ideas Conference” last month.
Senior-level executives from various companies such as bio-technology firm Agenus and internet marketing services firm Inuvo presented the ins-and-outs of their respective companies and the long-term investment benefits.
While the conference turn-out was cozy but successful for its first year, SABR Capital co-founder and managing partner Ariel Imas explained to eVestment that all attendees were personally invited to the event.
“We’re all family here,” Imas stressed.
And family they were. The majority of the attendees eVestment spoke to indicated that they personally knew Imas or Braden Ferrari--also the co-founder and managing partner of SABR--and were there to support the pair and their firm.
GAMCO Investors assistant vice president Jeffrey Illustrato, who heads the business development unit at GAMCO alternative investment arm Gabelli & Partners, was also present as a guest at the conference’s panel discussion. The panel delved into the topic of capital raising for investment managers.
“There will always be room for hedge funds,” Illustrato told eVestment when asked about the state of the industry’s capital raising environment due to the growing number of firms that are offering hedge fund-like mutual funds to retail investors.
Illustrato explained that “there are some strategies that won’t work well in a mutual fund—they are too sophisticated.”
SABR’s Institutional Investor Best Ideas Conference expects to take place twice a year.
