CFTC Chairman Reportedly Leaving Year-End

The chairman of U.S. financial markets regulator, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, is set to depart the agency by the end of the year.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Gary Gensler, who has been with CFTC for the last five years, may likely be replaced by either Democratic commissioner Mark Wetjen, former CFTC enforcement chief Geoffrey Aronow, New York Law School professor Ronald Filler or Treasury Department official Timothy Massad.

The article said that Gensler’s departure is “widely anticipated” as his “tumultuous tenure” oversaw a revamp of derivatives markets under the 2010 Dodd-Frank law. The Dodd-Drank law was designed to make the derivatives market more transparent and risky by implementing some 200 rules, such as the limiting of proprietary trading at investment banks and the creation of a consumer protection bureau.
