Ex-Tech Analyst Avoids Prison in Insider Trading Case

A former technology analyst who pleaded guilty in 2011 of leaking confidential corporate information to hedge funds avoided jail time at his sentencing on Thursday.

Reuters reported that Bob Nguyen, who worked at expert networking firm Primary Global Research, received two years of probation from U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in a New York federal court after being praised for assisting the government with several insider trading investigations.

Judge Rakoff said that while Nguyen’s sentencing should not be seen as a suggestion that insider trading is a minor violation, “it was a reflection of the fact that such prosecutions frequently require cooperation to succeed.”

Nguyen had also agreed to pay about $190,000 in restitution to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
