The 20 largest hedge funds in the U.K. control 82% of the region’s assets under management.
According to a survey of U.K.’s biggest funds conducted by the Financial Conduct Authority that Bloomberg Businessweek obtained, U.K.-based hedge fund firm firms control nearly 20% of the industry’s global assets.
FCA head of supervision Clive Adamson explained that due to the high percentage of hedge fund capital that is being managed in the U.K., “it is important that people have confidence in how we regulate this market.”
About $470 billion of assets are managed by hedge funds in the U.K., and 450 of the firms are registered with the regulator. The FCA survey includes data from 49 firms--which manage $481 billion globally-- and from 106 funds, with assets of $345 billion.
