Van Eck Global

Firm Profile: Institutional Asset Management

Product: Analytics

Client Since 2012

Van Eck Global was among the first U.S. money managers helping investors achieve greater diversification through global investing – offering innovative, investment choices in hard assets, emerging markets, precious metals, fixed income and other specialized, domestic and international asset classes. When searching for an analytics and data solution to conduct its in-depth portfolio management research, peer and competitive analysis, the firm reviewed several providers and even worked with a few before finding eVestment.

Timely, Detailed Hedge Fund Data

The firm’s long/short equity portfolio manager, Marc Freed, had used other data sources in the past to carry out his monthly analysis for the firm’s liquid alternatives strategy – however he found the eVestment hedge fund database to be superior in terms of the volume and timeliness of the information. “The investment strategy’s systematic, rules-based approach is totally data dependent, and because of this we rely on eVestment’s hedge fund database for the initial step of our investment process,” said Freed. Freed explained that in the past when using other providers he may have only received half of the data he needed within the month following the month-end date and sometimes it would take up to 75 days to get all the data. eVestment, he noted, was collecting and distributing the data “much faster.” “eVestment provides me with over 80 percent of the data within the month, which is incredibly valuable and a dramatic improvement over just the past couple of years since their acquisition of Hedgefund.net. The level of detail available also helps us break down and classify funds into smaller homogenous groups for our internal analysis,” said Freed.

Advanced Software For Head-to-Head Analysis

On the competitive intelligence front, the firm’s Product Manager for Emerging Markets Active Strategies, Anthony Sassine, had used eVestment in the past at multiple firms and was familiar with the capabilities. In his opinion Sassine saw it as the “most used software” in the marketplace and the “most advanced in terms of institutional data.” Upon joining the firm he chose to implement eVestment Spectrum Analytics for his peer analysis and rankings research, as well as for use in comparing its strategies head-to-head with competitors. “We needed to be prepared when we were going into meetings and eVestment gave us that competitive edge to know exactly where we stand on institutional clients’ lists,” said Sassine. “The tool is great – very user-friendly and easy to use with minimal training,” added Sassine.

A Pleasure to Work With

Both gentlemen agreed they were pleased with the level of service and support eVestment offered. “The client service team is very knowledgeable and has always been accessible when I needed them,” said Sassine. Freed concurred, “Organizationally, it has been a complete pleasure dealing with eVestment from the founders all the way across the board to client service.”
