Firm Profile: Institutional Investment Marketing
Founded in late 2008 by Principal John Schaffer, Catallyst Advisors seeks to identify the world’s best investment managers and introduce them to the Australian and New Zealand institutional investment communities. Catallyst is not an investment management marketing facility available to investment managers at large — rather, the firm is about identifying the true skill and sustainable quality of managers that, for various reasons, may have fallen under the radar. By hand picking up-and-coming managers and matching their skills to investor and consultant needs, Catallyst is able to provide a valuable contribution to investment outcomes.
Complete Data Set from a Known Source
In order to serve its client base with competitive information, Catallyst was searching for an investment analytics tool that could offer a complete set of data with robust capabilities for reporting. Other tools the firm reviewed offered limited access, but Catallyst needed regular and direct access to execute detailed performance and peer-group analysis to correctly position clients in front of consultants and investors. The firm’s Principal, John Schaffer, had heard of eVestment and knew of several asset consultants already using the tool. After working with the local Australian eVestment office, Schaffer made the decision to choose eVestment’s Analytics solution for his firm’s needs.
A Wealth of Data with Custom Reporting
Catallyst currently uses Analytics on a routine basis to prepare quarterly investment reports on their clients for institutional investors and asset consultants, in addition to producing ad hoc research reports to differentiate and highlight client capabilities. Schaffer notes, “There is so much information available and so many ways to analyze the data. I rely on eVestment for my reporting needs and have often used the various calculations to demonstrate opportunities in the market for my clients.”
Timely Data at an Affordable Price
The eVestment Analytics solution offers current qualitative and quantitative data for the investment management community by working with managers who directly input their data into the system. Having access to up-to-date information for its marketing services was definitely a contributing factor when Catallyst selected eVestment. Schaffer describes, “It is a challenge for any data provider to get timely updates from managers, but eVestment’s data is as timely as it could possibly be.” Schaffer further offered, “You couldn’t find a better alternative for the price.”
Service That Stands Out
Schaffer admits that being “tech-savvy” isn’t necessarily one of his greatest assets; however, he was able to easily navigate the eVestment tool for his every-day needs. When he required support for more complex analysis, he found the client service team to be ready and willing to help. When asked about how eVestment handled any problems that might have arisen in the past, Schaffer was hard-pressed to think of a notable objectionable experience. “If there was any aspect of eVestment that stood out, client service would be it. It couldn’t be better,” said Schaffer.
