Duff & Phelps is an investment management boutique based in Chicago, Illinois. The firm provides a limited number of specialized investment strategies, including infrastructure, real estate, MLPs and energy, international equity and custom solutions for institutional investors. Duff & Phelps has been an eVestment client since 2010 and subscribes to the Large Manager Premium package as well as the Omni database population service.

BJ Plant is the Senior Marketing & Database Specialist for Duff & Phelps. She has been a long-time user of eVestment over the course of her career. At the end of 2016, BJ began working with a specialist on the eVestment Professional Services team to build a competitive analysis report.

Developing a More Comprehensive Report

“I had built quarterly reports using the Compare module in prior roles, but that process did not give me everything I needed and it was time consuming in terms of reformatting reports each quarter.” BJ said. “The eVestment specialist told me eVestment had done some work building out a more comprehensive report with a few other clients and that these report templates could really save me time.”

BJ went on to describe the process around developing the report with the eVestment team. “We discussed building a report that would show our top competitors and give an overview of what they looked like in terms of assets, net flows, fees, personnel and turnover, assets by client type, characteristics, sector and regional allocations,” she said. “It would also show performance and risk metrics, product viewership and a narrative summary of their product, all in one report.”

Giving Sales and Portfolio Management Teams an ‘Edge’

BJ said the report is consumed by both her sales and portfolio management teams. “We’ve used it for the last three quarters with our sales team and we are rolling it out to the portfolio management team this quarter. When I presented the report to the sales group, they thought it would help give them an edge.”

“For example, if they were going to a consultant meeting, or giving a presentation to a prospect, they would be armed with useful information on our top competitors, and could explain how we may be complementary to managers already on their roster. These reports have been very highly regarded by the sales team.”

BJ said she thoroughly enjoyed working through the report development with her eVestment specialist.
